Research: Teaser Trailer Analysis; Cowboys & Aliens

GENRE:

  • Ultimate hybrid genre - Western vs Alien/ Sci-Fi

NARRATIVE:

  • A stanger with no recollection of his past stumbles into a hard desert town, the only hint of the history is the mysterious shackle that encircles ones wrist. Unfortunately the people of this town don't welcome strangers kindly. Although, before you know it the isolated town is attacked by marauders from the sky, screaming down with breathtaking velocity.

UNIQUE SELLING POINT:

  • Unusual contrast of western and futuristic sci-fi

TARGET AUDIENCE:

  • Broad audience
  • Family = 12A
  • Harrison ford = American Audience/ Daniel Craig = British Audience

MUSIC/ SOUND:

  • Mysterious quiet
  • Western ambience
  • Drum echo on every shot change

SHOT TYPES/ CAMERA ANGLES:

  • Grainy screen look which illustrates the western retro appearance
  • Fade black into and out of every shot - like a blinking movement (Highlights the build of tension)

PACE:

  • Every other scene is slow into fast, slow into fast - This creates emphasis on the build of tension throughout the teaser trailer.

DIALOGUE/ VOICEOVER:

  • A standard western american accent is used on all the characters to create and set the scene of a western style film.
  • There is no voiceover used, which almost creates a sense of loss of company and guidance, it emphasises the feel of being more involved in the film rather than being told about it from an outsiders perspective.

SPECIAL EFFECTS:

  • The special effects only really kick in when the Aliens enter with blue flashes of lights. The space ship flys across the street and throws dust everywhere to create a sense of shock. Obviously the special effects aren't quite up to scratch as this is an early set teaser trailer with the actual film predicted to come out in 'Summer 2011'.

CREDITS AND INTERTITLES:

  • The fact that the film comes across highlighting 'Director of Iron Man' - this allows the audience to identify with Iron Man and relate and trust with the upcoming film.
  • 'Steven Spielberg' - Another famous name that the audience would be able to identify with, which enhances the broad audience appeal.
